Being a parent is your choice

September 05, 2017

It's the beginning of a new school year, and many parents are all too familiar with the costs and time spent in preparing their children to go back to school. For those who have chosen not to have children, the back-to-school exercises are more of a spectator sport.

In a Time Magazine article written by Bonnie Gayle, the author highlighted how not having children has helped her to save her money, make very lucrative investments and live her dream life.

Having children is perhaps the most life-changing decision that anyone makes because of the sheer commitment and sacrifice that parenthood requires. For some, it can also be the most rewarding experience, but for others, choosing to be childless is much more appealing. Unfortunately, those individuals who chose not to have children still face negative comments and judgement. The fact that society expects an adult of child-bearing age to reproduce is still strong, and going against this expectation is not celebrated. The idea that a person can live a full, happy life without ever having children seems incredulous especially to parents.

So, what are some of the reasons why some individuals choose to remain childless?

No interest in parenthood

Believe it or not, there are people who just never felt like having children. Their biological clocks seem to be permanently off, because they never felt the instinct or need to bear children.

Health reasons

While so many have the desire to become a parent, they may have health issues that make it difficult for them to fulfil that desire. Some simply give up the notion all together.

No relationship or partner

Some persons will have children if they feel happy in the right relationship with a supportive partner. Otherwise, they will remain childless. Being a single parent is simply not an option for these individuals.

Abusive childhood

Past experiences can serve as a deterrent for some persons, and they will just refuse to subject an innocent life to their turmoil. For these people, choosing to remain childless is a decision they make to protect their unborn child from a life they wouldn't want.

Some persons have a lifestyle that simply does not facilitate children. From a high-risk job to a life of service, children simply don't fit. For these people, it just makes sense to not impose their lives on a child.

The idea of being a parent can be both fulfilling and terrifying, but it ultimately comes down to the individual. At the end of the day, parenthood should be a choice, not a consequence, so ensure that it is actually something that you want. Having a child is a permanent decision that links you for life with another person. Whether you co-parent together as a couple or from a distance, the child must always come first. Choosing not to have children is also a fulfilling choice, so revel in your life and enjoy the joy that you get from other sources. Have fun and stay sexy.
