J'can artistes ride Drake wave to Billboard
Popcaan may have been left out of Drake's Controlla record, but the deejay still has a cause to celebrate since he is one of four local artistes celebrating a place on the Billboard Hot 100 this week as a result of Drake samples on the album, Views.
Popcaan, who was sampled for the single, Too Good, currently sits at No. 52 on the chart, while Serani, who is sampled on the single titled 9, sits ahead at No. 45 and the controversial Controlla, which samples Beenie Man, sits comfortably at No. 34.
Beenie Man and Popcaan were unavailable for comment, however, Serani who made time for the interview, told The STAR that he was a pleased to see his labour bear fruit.
"Yu done know mi excited, but mi always a work. Sometimes, yu might feel like nothing nah gwaan or pick up. But by continuously working, you don't know when something good is going to come out of the work that you have been putting in. I have been in this for 15-16 years and some good news just jump een so. It's good to know that the song has been doing well and is getting bigger and bigger as we go along. Suh, yeah, man, mi excited," he told The STAR while overseas.
Serani last climbed the Billboard coveted chart in 2009 with his single, No Games, while Popcaan had success in 2014 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart peaking at No. 21 with his album Where We Come From and No. 82 on the Hot R&B/Hip Hop songs chart courtesy of the effort Only Man She Want.
Beenie Man has climbed the Billboard Hot 100 chart five times before with songs like Dude featuring Miss Ting, Girls Dem Suga featuring Mya, King of the Dancehall, Dancehall Queen featuring Chevelle Franklyn, and Feel It, Boy featuring Janet Jackson.
Notably, Serani's Dying record, which was sampled by Drake, also features Mavado. Despite being signed to an overseas-based record label, Mavado has never climbed the Billboard Hot 100 chart. However, he has had success on Hot Hip Hop Billboard chart with singles like Weh Dem A Duh and So Special.
