Greensleeves celebrates 40 years with reggae concert

United Kingdom-based reggae label Greensleeves Records is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. In commemoration of the milestone, the label has planned a series of activities to take place across the globe, with stops in places like London, Paris and New York.

On June 21, the label will hold a 40th anniversary celebration concert at the legendary BB King venue in Times Square, New York. Queen Ifrica, Alborosie, and Addis Pablo are among the acts slated to perform at the public event designed to highlight the tremendous impact Greensleeves Records has had on reggae music over the years.

The celebratory concert in New York is the kick off to numerous global celebrations. Also on June 21, which is Paris Music Day, the label plans to commemorate its 40th anniversary with an outdoor sound system performance by Blackboard Jungle Sound on the grounds of the Cite De La Musique: Philharmonie De Paris in Paris, France, the current site for the reggae culture exhibit Jamaica Jamaica! The celebratory events will continue in London through August and September, including the Greensleeves 40th celebration concert at the One Love Reggae & Dub Festival.

In commemoration of their 40th year in the music business, the label will release new dubs from Alborosie and King Jammy, as well as classic album re-issues from Hugh Mundell, Augustus Pablo, Keith Hudson, Sylford Walker and Linval Thompson, among others.


Further emphasising the depth of the combined VP/ Greensleeves vault, the company will release 40th anniversary editions of Culture's Two Sevens Clash, African Dub Chapter Two by Joe Gibbs and a three LP/ three CD, 40th anniversary edition package of The Congos' Heart of The Congos in June. At the end of May, the 40-track Total Reggae Greensleeves will give fans a four-decade overview of Greensleeves label classics.

Greensleeves Records, founded in 1977 by Chris Sedgwick and Chris Cracknell, is responsible for launching the careers of numerous reggae stars, including Barrington Levy, Shabba Ranks, Beenie Man, Mr Vegas, Shaggy, Elephant Man and Vybz Kartel.
