Moyann: Don’t bash female artistes - Young entertainer says trending topics cannot be avoided
Aspiring recording artiste Moyann believes there is pressure on females to put out music that captures a wide target audience and to stay current.
"I believe that there are topics that are on a to-do list in order to attain listeners at a faster pace...what we call trending is the main reason for the music that is being put out there," Moyann told THE STAR. "Singing about topics like empowering women, sex or lyrics that adopt sexual undertones and the female anatomy are a few that just happen to be most popular or what people want to hear. I don't believe anyone should bash us for that."
She says female entertainers, especially new voices, are inclined to produce music that the listeners are showing a greater interest in, especially on social media.
Moyann's track Netflixxx N Chill was coined from a common 'tweet' which was originally used without the nuance of sex, simply speaking to watching movies or TV series on the online streaming service.
But at the time she released it, it was popular for sending suggestive messages. It earned the attention of music listeners, currently holding the largest streams of all her tracks and consequently helped to grow her fan base outside of the sphere.
"Art imitates life, so personally I choose to create music about things that are current, as much as my own life experiences and appearance; women of past and current generations love to talk about how good-looking they are, whether their bodies are natural or surgically enhanced, and will be doing so for generations to come," she said.
On the road to breaking barriers she said the need to please the masses may break a few hearts but she is making sure to do it the best way she knows how.
"My biggest break will come when I have a song that hits the international charts and does not only appeal to local audiences but allows me to break barriers and gain a larger fan base," she said.
As a former student of the Caribbean Maritime University, she has challenged herself to make a living as a recording artiste.
"Failing is not an option. I took on this path with the strong belief that it will work for me," she said. "Success may not happen at the time that I want it to, or at a faster rate, but time is the ruler of all things. I am taking it one step at a time as I am still trying to figure out my weak areas and ways to make them better, and must mention that I am willing to work with anybody who wants to work with me."
