‘Day One’ a positive start for DJ Frass
Grammy award-winning producer DJ Frass thought it best to kick the New Year off with the latest dancehall single, which features Teejay, titled Day One. Notwithstanding being known for producing for a wide register of reggae and dancehall, DJ Frass says he remains selective regarding the artistes with whom he works.
"Not everybody that buss today or tomorrow is an artiste.Finding a one song doesn't make a person an artiste. I like to voice talent, who from the instant I hear them and see the attitude, I know it will build or enhance the brand," DJ Frass told The STAR.
The owner of the DJ Frass Records label revealed that although he had a couple of tracks recorded with Teejay, Day One is the first one selected for release.
DJ Frass said: "The first thing I usually listen for is the melodies, and first time I listen to Teejay I said, "Dah yute deh sick. Him have some crazy melodies and flow. His delivery is clean. When he records, a producer can hear everything clearly."
"The track forward naturally. We just deh deh a vibe, and him have the idea. So to start the year right, couldn't do it on a negative vibe," he continued.
Hits out against entertainers
Still, critics have already speculated that Day One hits out against entertainers with whom the producer has previously worked, but DJ Frass quickly refuted any such claim.
"It is a track you and anyone can relate to. Big up my day ones, my real friends. There is no reason to hit out against any entertainer ... just one friend showing love and respect to friends in dem life," he said.
"This year officially marks my eleventh year in the music industry. Going forward, it's not going to be normal. New millennium. The plan is to put more hard-core dancehall in the mix and push for the genre."
The producer says persons can look out for more projects with Teejay as well as Mavado. "Yuh know once I am doing work, the Gully Gad haffi deh pon it. That my day one friend. We have a lot of work coming out this year." He will also be working with more up-and-coming artistes like Moyann, who inked a recording deal with him in 2018.
"I am trying to help couple more young artistes who bring a new flavour to DJ Frass Records, and there will be music produced for international acts like Stefflon Don," he said.
