Ms Aldred asks about the use of turmeric in treating arthritis pain. She has been taking it for some months now and says she has seen amazing results, as she has almost no knee pain and the knee pain was really bad for several years. She is sharing her experience with Check Up readers who suffer with arthritis.

Turmeric comes from the turmeric plant which resembles ginger and it's the main spice in curry. Turmeric actually has many uses beyond its use for pain relief in arthritis.

Some disorders that turmeric is used to treat:

• Heartburn

• Stomach pain

• Crohn's disease

• Ulcerative colitis

• Diarrhea

• Intestinal gas

• Stomach bloating

• Helicobacter pylori bowel infection

• High blood cholesterol

• Depression

• Alzheimer's disease

• Systemic lupus erythematosus

• Headaches

• Acne

Turmeric contains the chemical curcumin, among other chemicals, which is anti-inflammatory and decreases swelling. Because of this it is very useful in helping to resolve arthritis pain. Making a tea from it is one easy and simple way to consume turmeric. Turmeric is available as the root and as the powder in several supermarkets/markets/natural health product stores. Some places might even carry turmeric capsules. Please note that this tea should not be taken while pregnant or breast feeding.
