Babyfather stabbed for child support!
A woman who admitted she stabbed her babyfather with an ice pick for lack of child support had her bail extended when she appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court last Friday.
Janice Brown is charged with unlawful wounding, to which she pleaded guilty, and malicious destruction of property, to which she pleaded not guilty.
Allegations are that on October 26, Brown used an ice pick to stab the complainant in his chest. It is also alleged that Brown flung the complainant's phone to the ground, damaging it.
When asked why she shouldn't go to prison for her actions, Brown said, "Whenever I ask him (the complainant) for maintenance for my son, he beats me. On the day I went to discuss money for my child, I didn't see him so I took his phone because I knew he would come to my house for it."
Brown said when her babyfather arrived at her house, he started quarrelling and physically attacked her, causing her to retaliate with the ice pick. She also said that the phone fell during the tussle.
Senior RM Judith Pusey advised Brown that she can raise an argument of self-defence during her trial.
Pusey also added that the child support matter should be taken to the Family Court.
She is to return to court on December 3, as the medical report was outstanding.
