5 guns, 46 rounds of ammo seized since Jan. 1
After only three days into the new year, the police are reporting the recovery of at least five guns, including one high-powered weapon and 46 rounds of ammunition.
Two men have been arrested so far in connection with two of the seizures.
Among the illegal weapons is a Colt AR M-16 rifle seized in Norwood, St James, along with 14 - 5.56 rounds of ammunition. No one was arrested.
In the other find, a 9mm Smith and Wesson pistol along with 14 - 5.56 rounds of ammunition was recovered in Mount Salem. A man was taken into custody.
In Trelawny, police seized a .45 pistol and eight rounds of ammunition during vehicular checks along the Salt Marsh main road.
The Corporate Communication Unit (CCU) reports that the illegal weapon and ammunition were found when the police stopped a bus and searched the passengers. One man was arrested in connection with the find.
Meanwhile, in Kingston, a .45 pistol was found and six rounds of ammunition along Rum Lane and Laws Street in the downtown area. The CCU says a combined team from the Kingston Central Operation Support Team and the Motorised Patrol Division made the discovery about 11:30 Saturday night when they came upon a group of young men who ran leaving the illegal weapon and ammunition behind.
A Glock 19 9mm pistol was also recovered in Olympic Gardens, St Andrew, in the early hours of New Year's Day.
The CCU says that about 12:21 a.m. a police team on mobile patrol heard explosions and went in the direction from which the sound was coming to investigate. A group of men ran when they saw the policemen. One reportedly threw an object which was retrieved and found to be a Glock pistol containing four 9-millimetre rounds.
No arrest was made.
