Two people were killed in two separate crashes along the Windsor Castle main road in Portland yesterday.

Dead are 31-year old David Bailey of Annotto Bay, St Mary, and Rushane Williams, 24, from Lawrence Tavern, St Andrew.

In the first incident, Bailey, who was driving a Mazda minibus with seven people aboard shortly after 3 a.m., reportedly lost control and collided head-on with a Leyland truck heading in the opposite direction.

According to the police, frantic cries were heard coming from the minibus following the crash. Several youngsters who were aboard the ill-fated truck ran to their assistance. All eight were rushed to Annotto Bay Hospital approximately five miles away. Bailey was pronounced dead and the others admitted.

In the second incident, the police said that Williams was aboard a Toyota Hiace minibus being driven by his father, heading east towards Buff Bay. Upon reaching the scene of the previous crash, the police said the Hiace slammed into the back of the ill-fated Leyland truck, which was awaiting removal by a wrecker. Williams was rushed to hospital, but later succumbed to his injuries.

The Buff Bay police are investigating.
