Chinese worker dies during freak accident
Labour Minister Shahine Robinson has expressed sadness at the death of a Chinese worker who died during a freak accident at the Karisma Hotel construction site in Negril, Hanover on Thursday.
"As Minister I take this opportunity to urge employers and employees to strictly adhere to the rules and Regulations governing Occupational Safety and Health in Jamaica and maintain high standards for safety and health in the work place," Robinson said yesterday.
Dead is Agen Han, 47, a scaffolding operator.
Han was was caught in a lifting machine on the site while fixing a cable when he was squeezed, killing him.
It is the second major mishap at the hotel which is now undergoing construction.
The first mishap unfolded roughly a month ago. It saw five workers being injured after the collapse of a section of the incomplete structure.
Robinson said yesterday that a team of technical officers from the ministry's occupational safety and health department has visited the Karisma site and has provided her with a preliminary report on the accident.
