Attorney Patrick Atkinson sympathises with the family of Khajeel Mais
Patrick Atkinson, defence lawyer for Patrick Powell, says he sympathises with the Mais family for the loss of their son, 17-year-old Khajeel Mais.
Atkinson, speaking on ‘Beyond the Headlines’ earlier today, said he hopes the family gets closure.
“I sympathise with them for their loss. This is one of the reasons why I have taken the position that I am not even going to be talking about this anymore because every time we speak about it, it opens a wound for them, and I think it's about time they be allowed to have some closure in the matter,” he said.
The attorney said there are times when he had the difficult task of using evidence in court that may offend the family.
“I understand the feeling they may have, but I don’t use it against them,” Atkinson said.
Atkinson added that it is always difficult for anyone to understand the pain that any family will feel at the loss of a loved one and particularly the loss of a child.
Patrick Powell, who was charged with the murder of Khajeel Mais, was set free in the Supreme Court on Monday.
The prosecution offered no further evidence in the case after the main witness, taxi driver Wayne Wright, said he did not see the shooter.
