INDECOM probes man's death
The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) has launched a probe into the shooting death of a man by the police at Wain Road in Portland.
The dead man has been identified as Christopher Fairweather of a John Town address in the parish.
According to commanding officer in charge of the parish, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Rex Swearing, a team of police officers were on a special operation at about 9:50 a.m. yesterday in search of Fairweather, who had been accused of stabbing 25-year-old Alanzo Kerr early yesterday morning along East Palm Avenue in Port Antonio.
The police said that they were confronted by Fairweather, who allegedly attacked them with two machetes.
The police retaliated, and Fairweather was fatally shot.
Yesterday, Portland recorded its first murder for the year when Kerr was killed. He was rushed to hospital where he died while undergoing treatment.
Swearing is encouraging persons who witnessed the stabbing incident or who may have information about it to contact the Port Antonio police.
