Back-to-school tips for parents

With the 2018/2019 school year set to begin next week, most parents should have most, if not all, of their back-to-school supplies.

However, for those who are really feeling the economic pinch, there are ways and means to make your financial burden lighter.

Here are some cost-effective tips that could be useful for not only the cash-strapped parents, but for those who just like to save a dollar or two.

Nothing beats the good ol' clothes dye

If the uniforms from last term still fit, there is no need to purchase new ones. Save a few dollars and make them appear almost new again by applying fabric dye. Packets and bottles of dye are readily available at most wholesales with very simple application instructions.

Keep caring for those school shoes

Check out the school shoes to make sure they're not dry-rotting. Air them out, and keep them clean and polished. That will prevent you from having to buy new pairs often.

Protect schoolbooks by wrapping them

Years ago, it was unlikely to see a textbook or hardcover book unwrapped. Brown wrapping paper was a must-have on the back-to-school shopping list. Do not throw out your old newspapers, either. Instead, use them to wrap your children's books and keep them as good as new.

Minimise on book expenses

Source second-hand books from family and friends, as well as stores set up for this specific purpose. Find out if there are any arranged book-exchange programs or book drives in your community, church or child's school. If there aren't, arrange one!

Seek help with school fees

School fees can be a financial burden at times, so if you are faced with difficulties in paying, why not apply for financial assistance under the Government's cost-sharing programme? Simply inform the school's principal or guidance counsellor about your inability to pay, and you will be further guided about the programme.

Prepare for rainy weather

School reopens during the rainy season, so secure your little ones by ensuring that they are equipped with the necessary rain gear. Protect their books and other school supplies by placing them in a sealable plastic bag before they are placed in their schoolbag. Raincoats and umbrellas are also must-haves.

Transportation and Safety

For those children who commute to school, encourage them to travel by bus. Not only is it cheaper, but it's safer. Topping up a JUTC Smart Card for the month is way more cost-effective than forking out cash for daily travel expenses. Also, teach your children not to travel with people they are not familiar with, and tell them what to do if they think that they are in danger.
