Troy Smith still a sportsman despite knee injury
Troy Smith may have had his time with Jamaica's Reggae Boyz football squad cut short due to a knee injury, but the Bounty Hall, Trelawny native continues to be active in sports by being a coach and mentor to the local children.
Thirty-two-year-old Smith, who made his international debut for Jamaica in 2010, frequently visits Bounty Hall Primary and Infant School, his alma mater, and passes on his football knowledge to the students there.
"I go down to the primary school and help out the little youths with soccer. Every year they have tournaments, and I go down there and show them one or two little things," said Smith.
FOND MEMORIES
Smith hasn't done much else in the way of sports since he suffered his knee injury off the field. However, he looks back fondly on his football career, which began in 2005 when he played for the Village United Falmouth team. Smith, who made his international debut in 2010, played for the St James-based Montego Bay United team in 2012.
"I started out from the under-20 squad, then I went to the under-23 team, and from that I went to the senior team. From that time, I never got kicked off the senior team until I got the injury, but once my knee gets back ready I would go back in sports, because I still have two or three more years left in me," said Smith.
"Right now, I'm just back and forth with visiting my father and then coming back and chilling with my family, but otherwise I'm not doing anything right now. I wish I could be playing right now, but I think my knee will be ready back for next season so I can go and play with them," Smith added.
