Toni-Ann’s win could fast-track development of St Thomas
Home to the therapeutic waters of Bath Fountain, Bath in St Thomas known for its historical and tourism value. The community has also produced one of Jamaica's leading dancehall artistes, Popcaan, and most recently the dignified Toni-Ann Singh, who was crowned Miss World 2019.
But like many areas in St Thomas, Bath cries out for attention. The community roads are in need of repair, commerce in the area is flat, and it appears development is in no hurry to get there.
Residents claim they have a big enough resume to get some much-needed attention. They feel that the attention the newly crowned Miss World has been getting should automatically flow over into their community and the parish, thus forcing the Government to fast-track their plans for St. Thomas.
But fellow daughter of the soil, entrepreneur and motivational speaker Shawnafi Dynesen, who now lives in Sweden, said that Singh's Miss World win may only be enough to spark the conversation, but not necessarily the work.
"Personally, I am pessimistic. The win does highlight St Thomas, and it's up to the entrepreneurs in Bath to grab the opportunity and promote the Bath Fountain and the botanical garden as tourist destinations," Dynesen said.
More investment
Michael Hue, mayor of Morant Bay and head of the St Thomas Municipal Corporation, said that Singh's win is a plus for the parish.
"Her victory will shine a light on the parish and will encourage more investment here. This triumph, when paired with the planned improvement of major road infrastructure and the urban centre will redound to the benefits of the people of St Thomas.
"Her win will open new doors for tourism prospects of Bath, which possesses the renowned healing waters of Bath Fountain Spa and Mineral and the Gardens. Therefore, with Toni-Ann's victory, and as the Government fulfils their end of the deal, people of the area should prepare themselves for this development and to be part of the process," the mayor said.
