Like many Jamaicans, Staceyann Buchanan was laid off because of the novel coronavirus.

As a result, her plan to build a home has been stalled and she is seeking the public's assistance in purchasing the rest of the materials needed to complete the project.

"I had purchased materials such as cement, blocks and tiles, but I am stuck there because of the corona. Right now I am out of a job and I really want to finish up because I have two children and just want to make them comfortable," she said.

Fortunately, Buchanan is not homeless, as she has been sharing a home with a relative. But her desire is to have her own roof over her head; those plans are now in limbo.

Hotel industry

"This virus has been affecting everyone, not only those who are sick. A lot of us don't see a way out," she said.

The 39-year-old, who hails from Falmouth, Trelawny, said that she was working in the hotel industry but she and other staff were laid off shortly after the COVID-19 hit local shores.

Several hotels and resorts have closed their doors, resulting in job loss for thousands.

"Honestly, if I was working I wouldn't be asking for help because I would save and buy the rest of materials, but I don't know when I will be able to return to work and I really want to finish the house," she said.

"I haven't even started the foundation or anything because I have not collected the material as yet, but I have the receipts of the purchase so I am just asking for assistance, no matter how small it may seem," she said.
