Children, 15 and 8-y-o, killed by thugs
Screams of anguish pierced the air last night as police tried to secure forensic evidence in sections of Dumfries Street in Denham Town, west Kingston, following the killing of an eight-year-old girl by gunmen earlier in the afternoon.
"Jesus answer mi prayer to give mi some angel, please send some," wailed a woman, who was identified as a family member of the deceased.
A cop who spoke to the news team said that based on reports, the youngster was not the intended target.
"It is alleged that men were firing at someone and she was sitting on her verandah and was accidentally shot. She was taken to the Kingston Public Hospital (KPH) where she was pronounced dead," the cop said.
Quick action by the security forces lead to the arrest of one man and the seizure of a firearm.
A police officer was also left nursing injuries after he was hit with a stone thrown by an angry resident after the lawmen tried to disperse a crowd that had converged on the scene.
"We wanted them to clear the road in light of what was happening and the crowd was not pleased by this, and during this process, an officer was hit in the face causing injuries to his nose. He was taken to KPH for treatment," the cop said.
Meanwhile the family of 15-year-old Nyron Taylor was also left weeping yesterday afternoon on Drecketts Place in Tivoli Gardens, after he was shot and killed.
The Tivoli Gardens High School student was leaving home to meet his father in downtown Kingston, when he was approached by thugs and shot several times in the chest. He died on the spot. The shooters escaped.
Cidella Matthews, his aunt, told THE STAR that the youngster was en route to his father's house to collect money.
"That a something weh him usually do so this was never expected. I was home when I heard the news and all I could do was pray and cry," she said.
Matthews said that she had never heard anything bad about her nephew.
"Him always a smile and him always a laugh. Him always a seh him wah turn a soldier or a footballer," she said. When THE STAR team contacted the family, his mother was in no condition to speak.
"Him mother traumatise. She traumatise because is her only child. She nah react to anything," Matthews said. Meanwhile, a friend and neighbour of Taylor described him as a 'good yute'.
"Me and him used to fly kite and ride bicycle and most times we run we gimmicks and dem thing deh. Is a good yute," he said.
