Prayers answered as med student pays first-year tuition
After two articles in THE STAR, in which she sought assistance to pay her first-year tuition, medical student at The University of the West Indies (UWI) Perisa Miller can rest easy knowing it has finally been paid in full.
Miller's mother, Michelle Cameron, told the news team that the remainder of her debts were gracefully paid by a doctor who, like Miller, attended Meadowbrook High School. Cameron says the act of kindness almost made her pass out.
"Last week Wednesday when he called and said, 'I'll just cover that,' I said, 'What you sending?' Him say, 'No, that is not relevant, I'll cover that. I'm a graduate student from Meadowbrook and I am a doctor.' Mi seh me bawl and say, 'Jesus!'" said Cameron. "Di man frighten mi suh till me nearly drop dung. Mi never know seh a suh God real. Me know that Him real now, enuh, because mi prove it to miself. Because whatever me daughter a gi mi now, is what me ask for. She's 21 now and no problem wid boyfriend, nothing. Mi nuh know if she a nerd or wah. But she a focus on her book, and a dat me ask for!"
The doctor, who opted to remain anonymous, told THE STAR that he only wanted to help a person who he saw potential in.
"She's a medical student in need, she went to a good school," he joked. "It's clear that's she's very bright and she'd doing well, but she's having problems because her family doesn't have the means to send her to school. I don't do that to get that kind of response (publicity). That don't drive me. If I didn't get a response it would still be cool."
Though unsure how the rest of her university career will go, funds for Miller's next semester at The UWI have already started to pour in.
"Di other anonymous man that donate the $650,000 end up donating $250,000 more. I have some in my account, too. Plus more is at university, 'cause most of the donors send it to university as well. Dem send for this exam but it run over, so we giving thanks," she said. Cameron said that there was not enough space in THE STAR for her to thank all the donors.
"Big up di doctor weh reach out anonymously, di people dem weh donate even words of encouragement. Mi body feel alright. It come een like a money to me. Big up di world, di people dem weh donate, even mi boss. A whole heap a dem!
