Commissioner of Police Dr Kevin Blake has issued a stark warning about internal threats to the reputation of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF). In his weekly Force Orders to members of the 157-year-old organisation, Blake said that while there has been progress in many areas, there continues to be ongoing challenges.

"There are some among us who are determined that our gains must be eroded and our gem of an organisation must always be in disrepute," Dr Blake stated.

His comments, marked by candour and accountability, underscored the critical need for JCF members to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, both on and off duty.

The commissioner did not mince words as he reflected on recent events involving members of the JCF. "Unfortunately, I am now being left to reconsider the wisdom of that decision, given the reputational risks to the organisation brought about by the very poor decisions that some of us who are so engaged make," he remarked.

The commissioner's comment follows recent ugly incidents involving members of the JCF. Last month, two policemen were charged with murder, among other offences, in the fatal shooting of three men in east Kingston. In another incident, both the Police High Command and the Independent Commission of Investigations commenced probes after it was alleged that an off-duty cop was involved in an assault of two persons at a party held at the Mas Camp Car Park, National Stadium, in Kingston last month.

Meanwhile, Blake's words served as both a critique and a challenge, reminding members that the poor choices of a few can undermine the collective efforts of many.

Meanwhile, with the holiday season under way, Blake acknowledged the increased operational demands facing the JCF. The combination of early holiday traffic, damaged roadways, and bustling market districts has added complexity to the Force's work. Despite these challenges, the commissioner expressed unwavering confidence in his team's resilience and capability.

"This season promises to be a challenging one for us. However, we have time and again shown that we can rise to every challenge and deliver. This season will be no exception," he said.

The assurance highlighted the JCF's commitment to maintaining safety and order during one of the busiest times of the year. While emphasising operational readiness, Blake also addressed the personal sacrifices made by JCF officers. He encouraged them to find time for their families.

"Do find time to spend with your loved ones, especially the children. While we, as adults, can postpone Christmas, children find it more difficult to," he said.
