Authorities declare Fabuloso cleaners sold in Jamaica safe

January 13, 2025

The National Compliance and Regulatory Authority (NCRA) has sought to reassure Jamaicans that Fabuloso multipurpose cleaners sold locally are safe for use.

Inspector Lenworth Clarke, who oversees the Import and Domestic Commodities Inspectorate, dispelled circulating social media claims of contaminated products.

"The NCRA is aware of a video recording and images on social media platforms about possible harm that may be caused by a multipurpose cleaner with the brand Fabuloso. What we can say is that last year, we gathered information from a foreign article, and also from the Consumer Affairs Commission (CAC), indicating that there was a recall and disclaimer," Clarke told JIS News.

He noted that only products with specific lot codes were recalled, and none of them apply to Jamaica. Clarke said that details from the website www.fabuloso.com/recall indicate that the recall affected products sold in the United States and Canada only. Fabuloso products labelled "Made in Mexico," which are sold in Jamaica, are not part of the recall.

Clarke explained that in 2023, the NCRA inspected approximately 1,870 units of Fabuloso from about 60 different codes and 11 scents, with all products originating from Mexico except for one batch from Guatemala.

"None of the codes being recalled were located in Jamaica," he confirmed.

Clarke said NCRA continues to monitor Fabuloso products within Jamaica and at ports of entry.

"We continue to work with our stakeholders, in particular, the CAC, to gather any additional information, and we also continue to keep a lookout on foreign media for any new or additional information on this commodity," he said.

The recall in early 2023 affected 4.9 million units in the United States and 56,000 in Canada due to bacterial contamination risks. The affected products were manufactured between December 14, 2022, and January 23, 2023.
