‘Jacket’ exposed! - Mom devastated as DNA test reveals baby’s true father
After weeks of nail-biting anticipation, Amy* finally received the DNA test results on Wednesday--and the truth hit her like a wrecking ball. She had been torn between two men -- John* and Larry* -- during the critical window of conception, but ultimately chose to give the child to Larry.
However, as the baby grew, unmistakable features of John, a man with 11 children, began to emerge. Panic gripped her. While John had only contributed a pack of diapers, Larry has been a constant source of financial support, even making plans to bring the child to North America.
Larry had no idea that he may have been gifted a 'jacket', but John was aware. The situation has been eating away at Amy's conscience, so much that she decided to reach out to this newspaper's DNA DETECTIVE to help her determine who is her child's father. DNA testing company Polygenics Consulting collected and tested the sample, and discovered the shock truth. Larry is not the father! John is!
"Yuh serious?" were the first words that escaped Amy's lips when the results were revealed to her. Her voice cracked as she added, "A really him a di father?" before she broke down in tears.
For almost half an hour, Amy fought to compose herself as she cried uncontrollably.
"Mi nuh know how mi a guh tell him, mi nuh know weh mi a guh duh," Amy muttered as tears streamed down her face.
The 20-something-year-old Amy found herself in DNA dilemna after she decided to sleep with Larry at a time when her five-month relationship with John had gone sour. A month later she found out that she was pregnant. John denied that he could be the father, while Larry was over the moon when he heard that his first child was on the way. Amy fears that he will be crushed by the results of the DNA test when he finds out.
"Mi just know him a guh tek it hard," she cried.
But it is not just Larry's emotions that Amy is worried about. His mother has a strong bond with her new 'grandchild', and she now wonders how the grandma will take the news.
As for John, he is elated to be a father for the 12th time and wants his name on the birth certificate.
"Mi need mi name fi add to di baby's birth paper. Suh she need fi tek off dah man deh name and stop tek him money, because a set she a set up harself," the 55-year-old said.
Both Amy and John have decided to start the process to have Larry's name removed from the baby's birth certificate. However, the legal implications are complex. According to the Registrar General's Department, a paternity change cannot be done through a deed poll if another man's details are already on the child's birth record. To have the name changed, Amy and John need to go to the Family Court for a paternity order to be issued.
Amy said she plans to approach the court with the DNA results she received from Polygenics Consulting, and request that John be listed as the child's father.
