She seductively whispered in my ear ‘Come with me’
Carnival Road March was in full swing, a sensory overload of vibrant colours, intoxicating music, and bodies swaying that hypnotised me.
I was lost in the infectious energy around me that had my senses on fire. Last year's Jamaica Carnival was unlike anything I've ever experienced before. The energy, the music, the drinks -- I was lost in it all. But there's one thing I've never told anyone, something that happened that day during the road march that still makes my heart race when I think about it. It started off like any other Carnival Sunday morning. I got dressed, grabbed my Campari mug and linked up with my crew for the road. We hit the streets, dancing through Kingston like we owned it. The vibe was crazy -- water, sweat, liquor, non-stop soca music, dancing, and a sea of beautiful women everywhere.
Then, a vision in feathers and sequins peeped through the thick, scintillating crowd, her eyes shimmering with a mischievous glint. We locked eyes, a silent exchange that ignited a spark between us. We were immediately drawn to each other like magnets, our bodies moving in perfect sync as the music flowed. She had a waistline that moved like magic. I don't even know how we started dancing, but when she 'backed it up' on me, the entire world disappeared. The music slowed in my head, and it was just the two of us in that moment. I thought it was just another fleeting carnival moment -- until she turned around, leaned in close, and whispered in my ear, "Come with me."
I barely had time to think. I hardly knew this girl. Maybe it was the rum, maybe it was the sun, maybe it was the music, or just the magic of carnival, but I followed her through the sea of masqueraders. We slipped through the crowd, passed the trucks, and went to the sidelines next to a vendor. That's when she grabbed my face, pulled me in, and just started kissing me. Hard! Our lips locked, tongues colliding, hands touching, bodies in total heat, like we had been waiting for this moment all our lives. My friends saw the vibe and just allowed it to happen. The next thing I knew, she pressed up against me, our bodies moving in sync with the overpowering sounds of soca music. My hands were all over her, on her waist, in her hair, touching places I never expected. For a few minutes, carnival wasn't about the bands, the excitement, or the beautiful costumes around -- it was about us, caught in the heat of the moment.
CONFESSION
The next thing I knew, while dancing with this girl, a guy came over and said, "Yow, lif up from yassuh yute!" Me being the stubborn guy that I am, could not allow myself to look soft in front of this girl, so I stood there with her still dancing. Then, she leaned in, her breath warm against my ear, then she said, "I have a confession," her voice laced with a playful mischief. "I'm not who you think I am. I'm actually ... ." Before she could finish, the crowd erupted in cheers. When I turned around, it was Shenseea passing on a truck, so fans got excited. I love Shenseea, but in that moment, I couldn't focus. I eagerly waited for the truck to pass so I could restart the conversation with this girl.
Then finally, I asked her, "What were you saying earlier?" My heart was racing, palm sweating, and knees shaking, because this couldn't be what I am thinking!
She looked me dead in my eyes and said, "We shouldn't be dancing like this. Don't be mad, I wasn't trying to deceive you or anything, I just wanted to feel free for a moment."
Anxiety began to take me over, "Wah yaa seh?! Say it fast deh please!" I said to her.
She then looked at me and said "I'm... I'm ..."
I was getting upset and anxious, so I said, "Say it!"
She then paused for a moment and said, "I can't do this, I don't want to upset you and create a scene out here."
She immediately pushed me out of the way and carried on down the road as if we didn't just have this amazing moment of connection. My world stopped for a brief moment because I was left there totally lost as to what had just happened. Who was this girl? What did she have to tell me?
I immediately went back to my friends, and of course, they questioned me about her, and of course, I lied. I told them I took her number, and we would connect after. Up to this day, I'm still bothered by what actually happened. I've never told anyone about that encounter, but that's the thing about carnival -- sometimes you're left with an experience that not even you can believe.
