Nekeisha Burchell, the People's National Party's (PNP) candidate for St James Southern, says that the time has come for her and her supporters to repair the constituency, which she says has been broken under the Jamaica Labour Party's (JLP) governance.

She was speaking moments after completing her nomination exercise at the Cambridge Resource Centre in St James today, ahead of the September 3 general election.

"I feel absolutely privileged to know that South St James has confidence in me, a daughter of the south, to represent them. I am proud to know that they believe in the mission and vision I have shared with them, and that today we can start to pick up the pieces that have been broken over the last 10 years under the JLP government and start to rebuild our South St James together," said Burchell.

The JLP's Homer Davis defeated the PNP's Dr Walton Small to claim the constituency during the 2020 general election. Prior to that, St James Southern had been a PNP stronghold under former MP Derrick Kellier.

Burchell said she is not feeling any pressure to reclaim the constituency for the PNP.

"I feel that the people are actually giving themselves a challenge to regain South St James for themselves. I am really a part of that, because this is home for me," said Burchell.

In addition to Burchell contesting St James Southern for the PNP, and Davis for the JLP, the Jamaica Progressive Party's Leon Cunningham also attended the Cambridge Resource Centre to be duly nominated to represent his party in the constituency.
