Wilson predicts 'great' Grand Prix finals
Competitions director for the Digicel Grand Prix/G.C. Foster Classics, Maurice Wilson, has predicted that there will be massive support at the final meet in the series on Saturday.
"We expect great competition and a large number of athletes are expected," Wilson said. Speaking at yesterday's official launch of Saturday's meet at G.C. Foster College in Spanish Town, Wilson added that the event has already attracted some of the island's elite athletes.
Kamal Powell, senior marketing manager at Digicel, stated that the Digicel Grand Prix series has grown immensely since it started three years ago.
"The concept is for development of the athletes and we are doing that and as a sponsor we are very proud and the viewership is great as it is being aired in 27 countries along with the Tri-state area," said Powell, who also spoke of the work being done by fellow sponsors GraceKennedy, Malta and the Jamaica Urban Transport Company which has helped to transport athletes to and from meets.
The opening event at the meet will be the 2,000 metres steeplechase for girls starting at 8:30 a.m. to be followed by the boys' event 10 minutes later.
The Grand Prix events are the 100m 200m 400m , 800m 4x400m, long jump, high jump and discus.
