Gaynstead continue schoolgirl netball momentum
DEFENDING junior champion Gaynstead High was off to an impressive start in the opening matches in the second round of the ISSA Urban Schoolgirl netball competition.
On a day that saw rainfall postponing all senior matches and shortening junior matches, the defending champions came out firing on all cylinders in their Group 11 encounter against Papine High. They led 15-1 after the first quarter and went into the half time break 26-4 before cruising in the final two quarters to win 44-9.
Merl Grove joined the defending champions at the top of the group after upsetting former champions, The Queen's School, 18-17 in a close encounter.
St Catherine High kept their unbeaten tag in the competition after taking care of Mona High 34-12 in their Group 1 encounter. They had quarterly scores of 11-1, 18-4, 27-19 before closing out for 34-12.
Former champions St Hugh's High also had a big win in the group after getting by JosE Marti 31-8. In another match in the group, Holy Childhood surprised Camperdown 28-25.
The competition will continue on Monday at the same venue with the senior marches that were postponed, along with the Excelsior vs Meadowbrook junior encounter, which was not played.
