I am very disappointed - Thompson
DOHA, Qatar:
Elai ne Thompson suffered another disappointing end to a World Championships final, after her fourth-place finish in the 100 metres medal final inside the Khalifa International Stadium in Doha, Qatar.
Entering the championships as the joint world leader in the event with a best of 10.73 seconds this season, Thompson again struggled to find her best when it mattered most, fizzling to 10.93 seconds, as her club-mate Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce took the gold medal with a 10.71 seconds (+0.1) win, for her fourth World title in the event.
Second place went to Dina Asher-Smith in 10.83 (NR), while Ivory Coast's Marie-Josee Ta Lou took the bronze in 10.90.
Young Jamaican sprinter Jonielle Smith ran sixth in 11.06.
Finished healthy
Thompson, the double Olympic sprint champion expressed disappointment with the result and said the aim for her is to now focus on today's start of the 200m heats, which gets under way at 5:05 p.m. (9:05 a.m. Jamaica time).
"Honestly, I am so disappointed, but nevertheless I finished healthy. I didn't get on the podium but what can I do about that?"
"I came out yesterday (Saturday in the heats), I didn't get the best start. I came out today (yesterday) hoping to deliver but the legs weren't firing. I tried in the finals and they still weren't firing, but there isn't much I could do now, I just have to move on to the 200m and see if I can win a medal there," added Thompson.
It is the second let-down for Thompson, who also finished outside the medals at the London 2017 World Championships.
Despite registering fast time, Thompson has endured a challenging few years since her Rio 2016 double gold, having struggled to shake a nagging Achilles issue.
Not one to hold on to excuses, the sprinting star preferred to look ahead to the rest of the championships, while offering her congratulation to Fraser-Pryce for her accomplishment.
"I will not blame the Achilles even though I came here with a little pain. The past four days it was really sore, I could hardly sprint, but I didn't think It would affect me tonight but, what else can I do, I just have to move on," said Thompson.
"I just have to try and focus until the end of the championships and see what I can do, but I am very disappointed," she added.
"It's (gold medal) in Jamaica and the MVP camp and I have to congratulate Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce. To come back like this from pregnancy, she has done great," said Thompson.
