Bailey: We will win back the fans
National winger Leon Bailey says that he and the team will be resolute in bringing pride back to the nation as the Reggae Boyz conclude their World Cup qualifying tonight against Honduras and look to build for the 2026 cycle.
Jamaica's final game will be against the only team that they defeated in this campaign at 8:05 p.m. at the National Stadium, as they look to avoid finishing the cycle without a home win.
Bailey's comments come as he was unveiled as the new brand ambassador for telecommunications firm Flow in a ceremony yesterday. Jamaica were already eliminated from World Cup qualification after their 1-0 defeat by Costa Rica in February and have yet to win a game in 2022 losing four of their five qualifiers including home defeats to Mexico and Costa Rica.
Bailey says that he can sympathise with the supporters' frustrations and their reluctance to come to tonight's game but he says that the team is determined to win back the support of the fans and produce the performances that they deserve
GETTING BETTER
"I can understand why the fans are not showing up so much anymore. Because over the years it hasn't been great. But I can definitely say that things are getting better and we will do everything possible to be able to get the national team where they need to be like they were back in the day," Bailey said.
As was the case in the previous qualifier against El Salvador, the stadium will be opened to all fans regardless of vaccination status. While asking for support during their continued difficult spell, Bailey says that the team has to now give them a reason to see that better days are ahead.
First we have to gain that trust back from them through our performances and give them something to want to come to the stadium. I'll say still show your support whether at the stadium or at home but we prefer for you to be at the stadium. We are definitely going to do everything we can to gain that trust back," Bailey said.
Bailey was not available for the 4-0 defeat to Canada on Sunday but is expected to feature tonight.
