21st Century dating rules

April 17, 2018

We live in a world where everything is instant, and with the help of technology, we don't have to wait long for anything. From food to flights, we are moving at a very high speed, and that is no different when it comes to relationships. I'm old enough to remember the days when the house phone was the quickest means of communication. Before answering machines, you could only call someone's home phone and hope that they were present to answer. Otherwise, you just try your call again later.

Today, we have home phone, cellphone, email, instant messaging, voice notes - honestly, it is too much to list. So with all of the technology and the demand for everything to be instant, how does this affect dating?

Dating in the 21st century is different, but the same principles are still applicable. We still want to find love. We still want to enjoy each other's company, and we still want to make a meaningful connection that could stand the test of time. What are some of the rules that we can use to navigate the tumultuous waters of dating?

Don't make assumptions

Connecting with someone new in a relationship is already challenging, and the best way to overcome obstacles is to have clear communication. If there is something that seems out of place or weird, instead of making assumptions, talk about it. Be clear about your feelings and ask the difficult questions.

Ask for what you want

The days of traditional gender roles have evolved, and the expectations in relationships have also evolved with them. It's important for partners in a new relationship to lay out exactly what they expect from each other and how they intend to achieve those expectations.

State your deal breakers

Everyone has a point that they will not cross, and I believe it's important for partners to make that point clear. For some persons, it's cheating. For others, it is the creation of a child outside the primary relationship. Whatever your deal breaker is, it's important that your partner knows it.

Set your own rules

Every relationship is different, and so are the rules. So in your relationship, define how you will operate. Social media has become a very strong tool of conflict in relationships, so setting your rules as to how you will navigate this tool can be useful.

Take the risk

Entering a new relationship in this society, with all the obstacles, can be very daunting and it scares many persons. Do it anyway. Relationships can be very fulfilling and well worth the risk.

At the end of the day, dating in the age of Twitter is challenging but still very doable and very important. Human beings still have a need to bond; we have just evolved the way we do it. So meet someone new, make that connection and enjoy all the uncomfortable, weird, fun experiences that dating can present and make all of them count. Have fun and stay sexy.
