Stop blaming us for the fire — Riverton residents

Since the fire began, there has being numerous claims that the fire was started by arsonists, but the persons who live closest to the dump are rejecting those claims.

"Dem just love blame people from Riverton. Nobody dung ya nah light di dump because a it wi hustle off a," one resident told THE STAR.

The resident, who says she worked at the dump for several years until she developed respiratory problems a few months ago, believes no one who benefits from the dump would set it a blaze.

"Why wi woulda do dat and a we same one it a go affect cause wi nah go can go pon di dump hustle?," she said.

"Mi know weh mi a talk bout cause it a some people life, cause some a dem lef from even St Thomas and other parish fi come hustle."

Meanwhile, another resident believes the fire wasn't caused by anyone in particular.

"Sometime a nuh nobody light it, cause yuh have some chemicals, some old tyre under di dump, and when the heat touch dem, a just straight fire dat and it hard fi out," he reasoned, while nothing that dumps in St James and St Thomas have also been affected by fire.
