Cabbie fights wrecker driver for trying to take car

A taxi operator was recently hauled before the St James Parish Court after he allegedly assaulted a wrecker driver who was picking up the defendant's vehicle on orders from the Transport Authority.

Ansel Truby, the defendant, is charged with assault occasioning bodily harm.

Although the date of the alleged incident was not disclosed, the court was told by the complainant that he was given an order by the Transport Authority to pick up Truby's motor vehicle, which was parked in downtown Montego Bay. However, Truby resisted the complainant's efforts to take his car, which led to an altercation between the men.

"Do you know Mr Truby?" Parish Judge Sandria Wong-Small asked the complainant.

"No, I don't know him. I work with a wrecker company, and I was at work taking up his car, through the Transport Authority, so that's how I get to know him," the complainant answered.

"Aren't you prepared to utilise any other forum except for trial of the matter, to see if the matter can be resolved?" Wong-Small asked, in suggesting mediation.

"I just want to discipline this man because him wrong me and I was doing my job lawfully," the complainant said firmly.

"Whatever happened between you and him will remain unresolved, it's not going to be resolved by just a trial of the matter," Wong-Small replied.

Meanwhile, Truby told the court that he could not afford a lawyer to represent him, and was consequently directed to seek legal aid.

The case will be mentioned again on September 26.
