Government boosting training for teacherss

Teachers who will be preparing students for the new Primary Exit Profile (PEP) examination are among more than 3,000 educators identified to, this year, benefit from ongoing training programmes being provided by the Government through the Education Ministry.

PEP will replace the Grade Six Achievement Test as the secondary school placement examination as of the 2018/19 academic year, which begins in September.

Portfolio Minister Ruel Reid said particular focus is being maintained on the development of mathematics teachers, with more than 2,000 having been trained across the summer period.

Additionally, he said 90 coaches and specialists have been assigned to approximately 80 primary and secondary schools.

Reid also advised that the programme is being augmented through the Ministry's provision of 1,140 scholarships to teachers over the next two years.

These, he indicated, will facilitate training for 135 mathematics teachers, 50 physics and chemistry teachers, and 120 technical/vocational education teachers, among others.

Additionally, Reid said 235 various subject teachers are being exposed to a programme of in-service training to upgrade their qualifications.
