Alleged phone thief to remain in jail

Aman from St James who reportedly robbed a woman of her cell phone after threatening her with a piece of steel was denied bail last Wednesday after he failed to provide the St James Parish Court with accurate directions to his address.

Courtney Bennett, a 19-year-old construction worker of a Rose Heights address, is charged with robbery with aggravation.

Allegations are that on August 14, at about 10:30 a.m., the complainant was leaving her home when Bennett approached her and pointed the steel at her, before ordering her to give him her bag.

Bennett took the bag, which contained a Samsung cell phone valued at J$8,500, and ran off.

The complainant made a report to the police, and later pointed him out at the Mount Salem Police Station. Bennett was subsequently arrested and charged.

When the allegations were outlined in court, Parish Judge Sandria Wong-Small refused to grant Bennett bail on the grounds that he could not accurately identify where he claimed to live, and because he had previously been charged for shop-breaking.

Bennett was subsequently remanded until September 19 and ordered to give his fingerprints to the police.
