Police foil alleged gun smuggling plot in Westmoreland

Police say a major operation in Darliston, Westmoreland, on Thursday uncovered more than 1,100 rounds of ammunition and illegal guns, leaving one man dead after an alleged shootout.

The Jamaica Constabulary Force says a man who allegedly confronted the police was fatally shot and a firearm was seized.

According to the police, the operations were launched after law enforcement became aware of a plot to import weapons and ammunition into Jamaica through the ports.

They say officers intercepted one of the individuals believed to be involved in the trade.

During the interception, the man reportedly opened fire on the police, who returned fire, injuring him.

He was taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The police say they seized a rifle, two pistols, and more than 1,100 rounds of assorted ammunition.

They added that other items, including electronic devices and documents, were seized during follow-up operations and will be forensically examined.

The identity of the deceased is being withheld pending notification of his family.

The police say investigators are pursuing strong leads both locally and overseas as part of ongoing inquiries.

The High Command is warning armed criminals that confronting the police with gunfire will be met with decisive force and is urging those challenged by the police to surrender peacefully.
