Edwards spoils Brathwaite's debut

Ex-Barbados and West Indies fast bowler Fidel Edwards ensured fellow countryman Kraigg Brathwaite made an inauspicious debut for Nottinghamshire by removing him cheaply on the opening day of the Division One County Championship match over the weekend.

The 36-year-old Edwards grabbed three wickets to reduce Notts to 39 for four, in reply to Hamphire's first innings of 277 at the Rose Bowl in Southampton.

Brathwaite, the Windies Test vice-captain, made just five. He got off the mark with a boundary to third man but then edged Edwards to Jimmy Adams at second slip to depart in the eighth over after facing 21 balls in half-hour at the crease.

In his next over, Edwards forced Jake Libby to play on for 16 before bowling nightwatchman Matt Milnes for two to end the day with three for nine from six brilliant overs.

Edwards, who played 55 Tests, has now taken 34 wickets for the 2018 County season at an average of 27.

Earlier, captain James Vince (74), Liam Dawson (72) and Kyle Abbott (60 not out) struck half-centuries to get the hosts up their eventual score.

Hamsphire were twice in trouble during the innings before being bailed out by key partnerships. Struggling on 62 for four, Vince and Rilee Roussouw (13) put on 75 for the fifth wicket to restore order.

When three wickets tumbled for a single run to leave Hampshire on 137 for seven, Dawson and Abbott added a further 133 for the eighth wicket.

At the Oval, veteran former Windies left-hander Shiv Chanderpaul hit a patient, unbeaten 25 to help prop up Lancashire as they finished on 134 for six in reply to Surrey's first innings of 211.
