Scott looking to clear landmark
JAMAICA have never mined a medal in the men's triple jump at the World Championships, but in Tokyo next week this could all change. Jordan Scott has a glorious chance to create history.
Scott has been in his best form ever this season. He will be hoping to carry that form into the World Championships and put himself among the medals.
On the Diamond League circuit, he showed tremendous class, winning four times and finishing second once, leading up to the grand finale in Zurich.
His best outing came in Monaco, where he produced a personal best of 17.52 metres for the win, a mark that placed him at number three on the world Top List.
However, Scott failed to reproduce that form in the Zurich final. He ended fourth with a modest 17.16 metres and will now look to put that behind him as he resets for Tokyo.
The triple jump this year has been wide open. Andy Diaz Hernandez of Italy, formerly of Cuba, sits at the top with 17.80m done in March. Since then, his best has been 17.56m, which won him the Diamond League finals.
At that same meet, 2022 World champion Pedro Pichardo of Portugal, another Cuban-born athlete produced a season best 17.47m for second, while Algeria's Muhammed Yasser Triki claimed third with 17.42m, also a season-best.
Defending champion Hugues Fabrice Zango of Burkina Faso has yet to find his top form this season. His best is 17.47m, but he could be waiting for the big stage to explode.
China's Ruiting Wu, who finished ninth at the 2017 and 2019 World Championships, has shown remarkable improvement. He comes in with a personal best of 17.68m, done on home soil in early August.
Scott has a chance to better Jamaica's best finish at the Championships, when James Beckford ended sixth in Gothenburg in 1995. The question now: can he break into the top three?
He will need to rediscover his early season form and show Zurich was just an off day.
With none of the jumpers dominating this season, Scott has a real shot at the medals. Still, his more experienced rivals could outdo him on the day. For now, Diaz Hernandez gets the edge for gold.
