House burns down a day before husband's funeral

Hours before the start of

the 'set-up' for her common-law-husband, Errol Wellington, St Elizabeth native Lorraine Bennett suffered another major blow. Her house was burnt to the ground in Ivor Cottage, Malvern, leaving the already-fatherless children without a roof over their heads.

"It is rough," Bennett, 36, told WESTERN STAR.

She said that Wellington, 42, was the main breadwinner for the family of six, which includes two high-school children.

But as the family was preparing to say their final goodbyes at his funeral, which took place yesterday, a fire on Saturday gutted her two-room wattle and daub house.

Bennett said she was outside washing about 1:30 p.m., when she was alerted by her mother that the house was fire. She said she lost everything, including $60,000 in cash, which was also in the house.

"Me just get me padner draw and say me going to buy some things for back to school, and all a dat gone," she said.

"I just want somewhere to live. We have nothing," Bennett said.
