Unidentified man dies in alleged showdown with cops

A man remains unidentified after he was fatally shot during an alleged armed confrontation with police in Spanish Town, St Catherine, yesterday morning.

The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) has since launched a probe into the incident.

Reports are that about 8:15 a.m. on August 24, police personnel were carrying out a cordon-and-search operation in the Long Lane area of March Pen Road when the incident unfolded.

Police reportedly approached a premises and observed the man standing at the doorway. He allegedly retreated inside the dwelling as the team moved closer.

The police reportedly identified themselves and tactically approached the house.

The man allegedly re-emerged and pointed a firearm at the officers, prompting them to take what was described as defensive action.

The man was shot and fell.

Police reported that a Patriot 9mm pistol, fitted with a magazine containing five 9mm cartridges, was allegedly found in his possession.

He was taken to the Spanish Town General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

INDECOM is now investigating the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting.
