‘No one is bigger than the party’ - Seiveright emphasises party unity as he halts campaign
Delano Seiveright has temporarily paused his campaign to become the Jamaica Labour Party's (JLP) next standard-bearer in St Andrew North Central, making it clear that his decision is not a withdrawal, but a strategic move in support of party unity.
"This is not a withdrawal, far from it. It's simply a moment to allow the party the space it needs to move forward in unity and strength," said Seiveright.
The former Generation 2000 (G2K) president and longtime JLP rising star had been eyeing the seat soon to be vacated by veteran politician Karl Samuda, who has served as member of parliament since 1980.
Seiveright, whose only previous run in representational politics was a failed 2016 bid against the People's National Party's Dr Fenton Ferguson in St Thomas Eastern, said his campaign pause reflects his commitment to the party's greater good.
"No one is bigger than the party, and certainly no one is bigger than Jamaica," he added.
His decision comes amid speculation about a possible internal contest, with attorney-at-law Christian Tavares-Finson also expressing interest in the seat. Tavares-Finson is the son of Senate president Tom Tavares-Finson.
However, JLP General Secretary Dr Horace Chang has signalled that a selection contest in the constituency is unlikely. He warned that such a move could be divisive in a strong JLP seat like St Andrew North Central. Chang said that party leader Andrew Holness has taken a "special interest" in resolving the matter.
Meanwhile, Seiveright, who was appointed a Government Senator and Minister of State in the Ministry of Tourism earlier this year, said his focus remains on ensuring that the constituency is disciplined, united, and prepared for the work ahead.
"I remain fully committed to North Central St Andrew and to all of you. My heart is in this, and I'm still here, serving, listening, and working with you every step of the way," Seiveright said.
