Students get hands-on look at court system in Spanish Town
Chief Justice Bryan Sykes endorsed the inclusion of youth today as scores of students from various schools across St Catherine converged on the courthouse in Spanish Town this morning, October 10, 2025.
Sykes informed the students about the laws governing Parliament and the Senate, as well as the general functions of the courts and how bills become law. He encouraged them to study hard and maximize their potential.
"This is a function of the Court that goes across politics and everything. Therefore, it is very good that you are here with us to celebrate," Justice Sykes said.
The 65 students were drawn from Jonathan Grant High, St Jago High, St Catherine Primary School, and Solid Base Preparatory School. They were given an overview of the work and functions of the various courts.
Senior judges explained how justice is delivered at the Parish Court. High Court Judge Dale Palmer encouraged the students to take responsibility for their personal growth.
"We are in a time when you can be discouraged, as I too was discouraged. Therefore, you must remain steadfast and focused on achieving your goals," Palmer said.
The senior Parish Court judges highlighted how cases move through the justice system. During an interactive session, students asked questions about how long judges serve on the bench and what it takes to be a good prosecutor or defense attorney.
Students were also given a grand tour of the court building.
Julian Redwood-Johnson, Principal of Solid Base Preparatory, said: "It was a great day, as we brought 11 of our students here today and were duly informed. These students always dress as lawyers and judges on Career Day, but today showed them that it is more than what is portrayed on television."
