Form runners strike in Reggae 6
FOR a second consecutive meet, a 5-1 winner was the longest shot on the Reggae 6, ALKEBULAN overpowering GELROY a furlong out to beat four-year-olds, non-winners of two races, on his second attempt at the level after graduating from maiden company a month prior.
ALKEBULAN's victory at the higher level, within a month of promotion, exposed the four-year-olds, non-winners of two races as an inconsistent bunch, who should be similarly treated to claimers with whom bettors should never place their trust in bankers.
Of note, American debutant, UNGUIDED MISSILE, who showed form at exercise, galloping five furlongs straight in 1:02.4, was surprisingly outsped by the local-breds, racing prominently before flattening as the 3-5 favourite.
BALLISTIC MISSILE and BRISCOE, favourites at 6-5 and 4-5, respectively, won the next two races. BALLISTIC MISSILE improving on his July 19 third-pace run out the straight behind VALLEY OF LOVE and return-winner NOBLE SOVEREIGN.
BRISCOE won under a hand ride at five furlongs round, dismissing five-year-old maidens for claiming rider Jereau Stewart's first career winner.
The word must have been out on CRUZZIN AGAIN, who popped up at 2-1, reversing three dismal efforts, to land the fourth at five and a half furlongs, collaring STORM BOY inside the last half-furlong.
PROUDEST VISION, denied a win last out by a drifting LEGAL FIGHT, made amends in the fifth chasing down debutant RUSH OF CLASS, who lost second to ROYAL MAVERICK closing from off the pace at five and a half furlongs.
The Reggae 6 closer, which the weekend preview warned to approach "with an open mind", threw a scare with 24-1 outsider GALWAY BAY attempting to steal a march before being overhauled by a cavalry charge led by PIP, who won at odds of 7-2.
FOURTH CONSECUTIVE WIN
Meanwhile, United States-bred RIDEALLDAY dismissed last year's Jamaica Derby runner-up, RUN JULIE RUN, leaving the filly struggling for fourth in the seven-and-a-half furlong Poorlittlerichgirl for open-allowance runners.
Chalking a fourth consecutive win, three-year-old RIDEALLDAY wasted no time, challenging RUN JULIE RUN down the backstretch in opening fractions of 24.0, before swatting the filly off the lead three and a half furlongs out, gliding the second quarter in 22.4, splits which left her choking after the first half-mile.
Paul Francis barely gave RIDEALLDAY a few taps as reminders for the grey to complete the trip in 1:31.1, the fastest time clocked at the distance this season.
RIDEALLDAY's almost-effortless 1:31.1 bettered Mouttet Mile third-place COMMANDANT's 1:31.4, posted May 17 when getting the better of local champion mare ATOMICA and TIK TOK, all grade-one runners.
Having shown his hand, RIDEALLDAY has one more shot at open-allowance runners, a victory against whom would put him face-to-face with defending Mouttet Mile champion, fellow American FUNCAANDUN, in an epic grade-one battle.
Racing continues on Saturday.
