Hugh English hits number one in NY

July 15, 2016

An acoustic version of Mightyful13 recording artiste Hugh English's 'Hey Jude' has hit the pole position on the Sir Clinton Lindsay's New York Foundation Radio Networks Top 30 Music Chart.

The song, a cover of the Beatles 1968 classic, has pushed the Trench Town native into the limelight and he is glad that his hard work is paying off.

"It's a joy to me and a great accomplishment for my community," the singer, who was born Donovan English, said. "I started with a vision and a dream for Trench Town to go right back to its former glory and I am working on it."

honoured classic

Hey Jude was originally released last November when English teamed up with several top musicians to make a reggae version of the time-honoured classic. Those involved included guitarist Earl 'Chinna' Smith, drummer Santa Davis, bassist Christopher Meredith, keyboardist Robbie Lyn, percussionist Sangie Davis, Ozonie on harmonica and songstress Pam Hall on harmonies.

Persistent requests from a growing fan base resulted in constant radio rotations in Jamaica and internationally. Initial success of the song came when it peaked at number 12 on New York Foundation Radio Network Top 30 Music Chart.

A subsequent release of the acoustic remix two months ago, garnered even more raved reviews, and after 13 weeks on the said chart, it captured the number one position last Friday, making it the first number one for English and the seventh for Mightyful13 Records and his manager Fitzroy 'Rocky' Francis.

English, who grew up in Waterhouse, St Andrew, and has rubbed shoulders with some of the top musicians in the business, began his professional career in 2012 with the recording of various singles including Guns in the Hands of Fools and Youths From Trench Town.

Following this recent success, he has since set his sights on re-releasing Guns in the Hands of Fools and is also working on another Beatles cover.

The acoustic version of Hey Jude, which is available worldwide on all digital music networks, and all of English's upcoming releases will now be distributed by VPAL Music/Mightyful13 Records.
