Cinnic motivated by 'Money'
In today's society, being a cynic is very much an act of self-defence, a pre-emptive mechanism to protect oneself from deception and pain. Just ask 21-year-old dancehall artiste Otis 'Cinnic' Matthews, who knows that a cynic's road is a lonely but necessary one.
"I choose to be a cynic, hence my name; and it has a very real meaning to me, because I find that most people are motivated by self. They think only for themselves. Until they prove otherwise, I choose to be a cynic," the Music Tree Records artiste said.
A graduate of St George's College, he is now reading for a degree in international relations at the University of the West Indies.
FELL IN LOVE WITH MUSIC
Cinnic fell in love with music when he used to team up with his brother and uncle to write and deejay songs for friendly competitions during his leisure time.
"We used to do the clash thing in the house. We would spend many hours, me and my bigger brother and my uncle. So, the love for it just grew naturally from that time," he said.
He started to record music professionally for Music Tree Records last year. His first single is called Money, which has received airplay on HITZ Fm, RJR and SunCity Radio. He has also performed the song on TV shows such as 'Intense', 'CVM at Sunrise', and 'FiWi Choice Top 10 Chart' show.
"I am getting a great response to the songs online and in the streets. Right now, the Money single has gone over 3,000 views since its release on YouTube," he said, adding that he has his eyes set on a bright 2017.
