Jamaica Make-up Artist Awards to honour Dexter Pottinger
Jamaica's premier Make-up Artist (MUA) Awards show will be honouring the late Dexter '3D' Pottinger at this year's staging of the event.
Founder and chairman of the awards, Husine Orlando Newby, told WEEKEND STAR that having built a reputation as one of the best make-up artists in the local sphere, it was only fitting that he and his team honour Pottinger's memory in a special way.
"Dexter played a very integral role in the Jamaica Make-up Artiste Awards Show's first and second staging, and we have often times requested for him to be one of the nominees, and Dexter continuously said he didn't want to be awarded and that he preferred to work behind the scenes, judging the event and helping with the staging," he said. "What we have recognised is that Jamaicans remember the last thing about Dexter, which was the most horrendous thing, and we want to bring back positivity to his brand and remind people of what he stood for. We wanted to remind persons of his immense contributions to the local fashion industry, and so I made the suggestion to my board of directors and they loved the idea. They also know how much of himself Dexter gave to this industry. He deserves this and so much more."
Newby also revealed that in addition to the special honour, the awards will be naming a new category in Pottinger's honour. The category will be called Timeless Beauty and will be awarded to someone who has made tremendous contributions to the fashion world; it will be an annual award.
This year's award will be handed out in Pottinger's memory. His family are expected to attend the ceremony and receive the awards in his name.
"We reached out to his family and they welcome the honour. They are very elated because they too want people to be reminded of his work and not how he died. We are happy that we get to be the first entity to honour him in this way but based on his work, I'm sure we won't be the last," said Newby.
The awards show will be held at Eden Gardens Wellness Resort and Spa on June 9. The Jamaica MUA Awards had its inaugural staging on April 29, 2016.
The awards aim to honour make-up artists for their contribution to the beauty sector in a productive way.
