Spragga Benz thrills, dishes advice at Footloose

Anticipation was high as internationally renowned dancehall deejay Spragga Benz prepared to make his first appearance on home soil for 2020. Scheduled to bring some old school dancehall vibes to one of the most epic retro parties in Jamaica, the deejay came to Footloose on Saturday night with one intention and that was to please his fans. And he did not disappoint. Turning in hit after hit, coupled with a surprise performance from one of his brothers in music, Spragga Benz gave patrons at Mas Camp exactly what they expected.

To get the party started, Spragga focused exclusively on his female fans, spewing out classics such as Machine Gun Kelly, Born Good Looking, Tings A Gwaan and She Nuh Ready Yet. But, by the time he was ready to hail the gangsters, the ladies were just getting into the party mood, and so he promised them round two. Pointing out that he also came to 'reason wid di man dem', the deejay urged them to be smart about the 'gyallis thing'. In light of the recent spate of domestic violence related murders, Spragga encouraged the men to walk away from toxic relationships. "Bredda, pan a serious note, if you and a woman deh and yuh find out say it nah work, be glad and be thankful of the good times that you shared with her and send her on her merry way," he said. "Don't chop off her head, don't stab her up, don't kill her. Just give thanks that you had a good time with this lady and let this lady move along her way and yuh find another lady, no regrets." With that said he went into a rendition of one of his most recent tracks, No Regrets. As if the message was received, the men were seen bobbing their heads in approval.

Extensive catalogue

Still giving lessons to the 'thugs', the entertainer also drew on several hits from his extensive catalogue including Dollyhouse, We Nuh Like, Hunting and Tiny Tot, which earned multiple encores.

Turning his attention to the ladies once more, the deejay also had words of advice for them. Expressing that it's only natural for men to want to pursue other women, Spragga urged the ladies to have some faith in their men and not retaliate when they find out he's being unfaithful. "Yuh know say nothing nuh easy inna life and yuh man a go gi yuh bun, face it, nuh bother gi him back none," he said much to the disapproval of the women. "Mek me tell unu dis, yuh see any day a woman can sleep wid five man and breed fi di five a dem one time, den unu can gi back bun. One man can breed 10 woman same time innu, so weh unu a try be like man fah? How yah go know who a di father? When so much man a go chu, yuh weh yah go do when yuh thing run dung? Come on ladies, be wise and don't make Babylon trick unu, believe inna yuh man."

Although not in agreement with his message, the ladies put up little resistance as they wanted him to continue singing their favourite hits. He did just that as he served up a female favourite, Backshot. Agent Sasco also gave a brief but well-received performance adding to an already exciting night.

Following his almost 30-minute set, the deejay told The STAR that he had really been looking forward to delivering a great set. "This was great for me, my first show in Jamaica so far this year and it was really special to know that the first show was something of this magnitude and the fans appreciated it," he said. The deejay revealed that as he continues to connect with his home crowd, his next appearance will be at Hope Gardens at the Rum Festival later this month.
