Old Harbour Market gutted by fire

July 15, 2016

More than 200 vendors at the Old Harbour Market in St Catherine are without a place to ply their wares due to a massive fire which gutted the market.

The Old Harbour police confirmed that about 1:00 a.m fire was observed at the market.

An alarm was raised and calls made to the nearby Fire Station.

However, the lack of a fire truck at the Old Harbour Fire Station in St Catherine did not help the situation.

Help was summoned from Spanish Town, Portmore and May Pen.

The fire was brought under control after about four hours with the assistance of 37 fire personnel.

In 2013 fire of unknown origin had gutted a section of the market which resulted in the displacement of vendors and losses of millions of dollars.

Meanwhile Chairman of the St Catherine Parish Council Norman Scott said that there are plans to deal with displaced vendors.
