A St Catherine father who is accused of beating his 11-year-old daughter for failing to clean her room is to be sentenced in the St Catherine Parish Court on May 22.

He is Garfield Campbell, a 49-year-old farmer of Springvale district in Bog Walk, St Catherine.

When Campbell appeared in court, he pleaded guilty and was granted bail in the sum of $100,000.

Investigating officer Corporal Audley Williams told the court that the Bog Walk police received a call from the Springvale Primary School.

When the police went to the institution, they observed bruises on the child's back, hands, face and hip. The police interviewed the child who told them that her father used a piece of hose to beat her so that she would 'keep' her room clean.

When the police went to Campbell's home, he reportedly admitted that he hit the child out of ignorance.

Campbell was arrested and charged with cruelty to a child and assault occasioning bodily harm.
