Seven arrested in gas raid

A joint police/military team seized approximately 5,000 litres of petrol resulting in the arrest of seven men in Montego Bay, St James, yesterday.

Reports are that at about 2 p.m., during a special operation at various locations along Bay Road and Pimento Way, several men were observed conducting the illegal trade of the petrol from makeshift gas pumps.

They were accosted and 50 barrels containing petrol were seized as well as J$200,000 believed to be the proceeds as a result of the sales.

Also, motor vehicles were removed from the location, as the ownership of them could not be ascertained.

The street value of the petrol is approximately J$750,000.

The identities of the men are being withheld pending charges for offences under the Petroleum Act of Jamaica.
