Massive hole in Llandewey bridge ... Residents want it fixed

Residents of Llandewey in western St Thomas have called for the authorities to fix a bridge in their community, which they say is a threat to life and property.

The bridge has a huge hole in floor and residents said the structure is also broken. To keep the bridge passable to vehicular traffic residents have, in the past, placed metals and dirt on compromised section of the structure.

"It poses a great threat to pedestrians," said Horace Ogilvie, a resident of Llandewey. He said that with no street lights near the bridge, people, particularly children and the elderly, can fall into the gaping hole.

"Vehicles have fallen into it and people have to lift them out. It is serious," Ogilvie said.

James Robertson, the member of parliament, said that he has been fighting for that and three other bridges in his constituency to be fixed.

REMEDIALWORK

"I have been making representation for almost 20 years for four to five bridges in the vicinity of the one that has failed," he told THE STAR.

Robertson told THE STAR that the National Works Agency will do some remedial work on the bridge next week.

"The infrastructure is old and weak and needs to be upgraded. That bridge is weak and rotten and so is three or four other bridges in that area," he said.

Some residents, meanwhile, have threatened to mount demonstrations throughout the community if their calls for repair to the structure falls on deaf ears.
