A man was lucky to escape prison time after he chased his mother's fiance and threw stones at him.

The court heard that the defendant, Zumar Lindsay, 21, was being aggressive towards his girlfriend, when the complainant told him that he should not be arguing with the female, especially on his mother's birthday.

The complainant reportedly walked away, only to be attacked by Lindsay shortly after who was armed with a machete.

Lindsay chased him and when he couldn't catch the complainant, he started to throw stones at his mother's partner. The man later reported the matter to the police.

Feeling that his mother would bear the burden if he was asked to pay a fine, judge Chester Crooks initially sentenced Lindsay, who pleaded guilty, to 30 days imprisonment at hard labour as Lindsay's teary-eye mother looked on in disbelief.

However, he was brought back to the courtroom in handcuffs close to the end of the day's sitting.

Crooks had a change of heart and instead placed Lindsay on one-year probation and recommended that he do anger management.

"What you did was very serious," Crooks said, in warning Lindsay that he could spend three years in prison if he was brought before the court within a year.
