Little entrepreneur doing hair to fund dream room

At an age when many children are asking for toys and gadgets, little Kaillie Brown has been saving her dollars for something bigger – completing her room.

Kaillie first spoke to THE STAR about eight months ago, when her savings mainly came from carefully portioned lunch money she received each day. Now, she has found another way to earn towards her goal – hairdressing.

“I am saving up the money to do my room. When others did my hair, I didn’t really like it or it was too tight, so I just watched YouTube and started doing mine. Now I do many styles but I am not really like a pro, but I can do my thing.” she said. When asked about installing extensions, she confidently added, “Ye, I master that, knotless, boho everything.”

While progress on her room has been slow but steady, she said she is proud of how far she has come.

“I don’t like to spend, I like to save. So when I see something I really like that can help me in life, I can buy it. I am really excited. I feel great and I am very proud. I picked some colours already. I pick blue, part of the room is flashed so I paint there.”

Her father, Kevin Brown, shared that the room is now nearing completion.

“The only thing left for us to do now is to render it, paint, install electrical things like sockets, wiring for the roof and things like that. The floor is already tiled and there is a next window to get but we have come a far way,” he said.

But despite being proud of Kaillie, he admitted that he sometimes has to remind her to simply enjoy being a child.

“She doesn’t feel pressured and saving is just something that comes natural to her, she is just determined. Sometimes she come from school and see us working on the house, she change her clothes and come move buckets. That’s just her,” he said.

Kaillie said that her clients include family, friends and neighbours. Kaillie, who will begin Grade Six in September, said “dem calling and asking already”. However, with her Primary Exit Profile (PEP) examinations on the horizon, she explained that school must remain her priority.

“I don’t accept a lot [of clients] because remember I have to focus on school. I have PEP and I am kind of nervous, but I know I will succeed and I want to pass for Immaculate, Excelsior or Wolmer’s Girls so I have to focus.”

Her father said he remains confident in her abilities and continues to encourage her to stay focused. He lauded his daughter’s eagerness to save her money.

“If she see something on TV, she say ‘Daddy I am going to save for that’ and I be like ‘No man, I will buy it for you’. I just realised that she does not squander money. She really saves money and she has told me many times that she wants to be a businesswoman and pediatrician.
